Christian Meoli, a Los Angeles movie theater operator, has taken over the beloved Tiburon Playhouse, the three-screen movie theater located at 40 Main Street that closed during the pandemic. Meoli said he hopes to forge a refined, updated and curated theatrical experience for a new generation of moviegoers. The new and improved theater will be called Cinelounge Tiburon.
According to Meoli, his team is in the final stages of a full renovation of the existing theater which includes a total interior facelift, new screens, projection, sound systems, concessions and seating. The three individual theaters will be maintained, but one has been reconfigured as a hybrid/private space with room for 20 people. His vision is to create an opportunity for private viewing and gaming parties, allowing individuals - from teens to adults - to fully personalize the experience.
Meoli’s ambitions for Cinelounge Tiburon, however, go beyond private watch parties. He describes himself as a “stalwart believer in the theatrical experience” and an avid film curator. He hopes the Tiburon location will serve as a “flagship model” for what he hopes to replicate elsewhere in the Bay Area and sees the Playhouse renovation as an opportunity to reinvent the movie-going experience in a post-pandemic world. “Cinelounge Tiburon is an independent movie theater that is offering a return to the movies in a safe and elevated way,” says Meoli. “For everyone who has greatly missed a night out at the movies, it is going to feel great and be a perfect fit for what Marin wants in an outing.”
His vision includes outdoor events, food and movie pairings, luxury seating, and a renewed focus on comfort and cleanliness. “This will be a place where you don’t want to throw your popcorn on the floor!” says Meoli.
With his “keep it local” motto, Meoli hopes that the new theater will be a true community endeavor and act as an important catalyst for connecting residents and local businesses. Advertising and sponsorship opportunities will be available to local businesses and residents alike, and Meoli hopes that this lends itself to the creation of a community collective where everyone has a stake in its success.
Giving people compelling opportunities to stay local and keep business in our community is his ultimate goal. In fact, Meoli is so committed to this effort that he has recently relocated his family from Los Angeles to Tiburon so that he can manage the theater’s launch from the perspective of a local business owner and community member.
Meoli anticipates a June/July timeframe for the Cinelounge Tiburon Grand Opening and welcomes locals to join their Insiders Newsletter Club to receive weekly calendar and schedule updates plus film programming, special events and exclusive benefits.
